What Are Ceramic Braces?

Ceramic braces, also known as clear braces, work in the same way as metal braces. The difference between the two is that ceramic braces are made of a translucent material that will match the color of your teeth. This allows for a less visible and more aesthetically pleasing orthodontic treatment. Because of their cosmetic appeal, they’re frequently used by older teens as well as adults who want to maintain a more professional image. While ceramic braces offer the same great treatment in a discreet manner, there does happen to be one downside to this orthodontic treatment. The ceramic brackets that these braces use aren’t as durable as metal brackets, which means that they’re more prone to breaking.

Caring for Your Ceramic Braces

Because ceramic braces are more fragile than metal braces, it’ll be even more essential to provide an optimal level of care and maintenance for them. We highly recommend doing the following:

  • Avoid Harmful Foods – There are many different foods that you should avoid while wearing braces, but they usually fall into one of two categories: hard foods and sticky foods. Hard foods can potentially break the wires or brackets of your braces, while sticky foods can get stuck in the wires and brackets, potentially tugging on them and loosening them. Avoid both of these types of foods while undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Brush and Floss Regularly – It’s vital to remember your brushing and flossing, but it’s even more critical during orthodontic treatment. While brushing twice is typically sufficient, we recommend brushing four times per day (once after each meal and then once before going to bed) if you’re wearing braces. This is because braces provide many crevices for food particles and bacteria to get trapped.
  • Visit Your Family Orthodontist and Dentist – During your orthodontic treatment, you’ll need to visit your family orthodontist regularly to make sure that your braces are in good shape and that treatment is progressing as it should. This doesn’t mean that you’ll get to skip out on visits to your dentist, though; you’ll still need to visit your dentist to make sure that you don’t have any underlying dental problems that could complicate your treatment.
